The first version of Drive Away Protection was installed on production vehicles 9/93 through 12/93. The purpose of the Drive Away Protection system was to reduce vehicle theft as mandated by the European Insurance Commission to combat theft. Inside the ignition key is a small 15-millimeter-square microchip which verifies a sequence of codes to confirm this particular key is authorized for this particular BMW.

BMW is one of the first manufacturers to work with Xirallic pigments. This is a special type of pigment which allows for very strong reflection, bringing an added dimension of sparkle to the final paint finish. The colors appear more intense and brilliant. Xirallic is not used for standard production cars. These pigments are only used in Ruby Black metallic and Azurite Black metallic paint finishes, as well as the Brilliant White metallic paint finish.
